I have an appointment with a fertility doctor. Now what?

I have an appointment with a fertility doctor. Now what?

You've scheduled a consultation with a fertility doctor. Now what? Here are five questions you should ask a fertility doctor in your first visit:

  1. What tests will you perform to diagnose my fertility issues? Fertility doctors will typically perform a series of tests to evaluate your reproductive health, including blood tests to assess hormone levels, an ultrasound to evaluate your ovaries and uterus, and a semen analysis to evaluate sperm count and motility in men. Some of these tests are to be performed on specific days of your monthly cycle, so be sure to track cycle days. Make sure you understand what tests will be performed, what they involve, and what information they can provide.

  2. What are my chances of conceiving naturally? Many couples hope to conceive naturally and may be hesitant to explore fertility treatments. However, it is important to understand your chances of success, as age and other factors can impact fertility. A fertility doctor can help assess your likelihood of conceiving naturally based on your age, medical history, and other factors.

  3. What fertility treatments are available to me? Fertility treatments range from medication to assist with ovulation to more involved procedures such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Your fertility doctor can help you understand your options and recommend a treatment plan that is tailored to your needs.

  4. What lifestyle changes can I make to improve my chances of conceiving? While medical interventions can be effective, lifestyle changes can also play a big role in improving fertility. Ask your fertility doctor what steps you can take to optimize your reproductive health, such as diet, exercise, and incorporating integrative therapies such as acupuncture.

  5. What are the costs associated with fertility treatments? Fertility treatments can be expensive, and it is important to understand the costs involved before embarking on treatment. Ask your fertility doctor about the costs of each treatment option, including medication, monitoring, and procedures.  Most fertility clinics will have a coordinator to help you understand your financial obligation. You should also ask about insurance coverage and any financing options that may be available to help you manage costs.

In addition to these questions, it is very important to be open and honest with your fertility doctor about your medical history, lifestyle, and concerns. Your doctor will be better able to diagnose and treat your fertility issues if they have a complete picture of your health and history. With the right support and guidance, your fertility journey will run much more smoothly.

My most heartfelt best wishes to you,

Dr. Tamara
